2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games Torch Relays
Olympic Torch Relay
On October 30, 2009, Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson proudly brought the 2010 Olympic Flame back from Greece to Victoria where it began a 45,000 kilometre journey across Canada, visiting over 1,000 communities and places of interest before arriving in Vancouver on February 11, 2010, for a two-day relay through Vancouver.
In Vancouver, hundreds of people came out to see the torch move through their neighbourhoods with some of the selected torch bearers being our very own City staff. When the torch arrived at Vancouver City Hall, over 10,000 people came to welcome its arrival.
On February 12, 2010, the Olympic Flame ended its journey, lighting the Olympic Cauldron where it stayed lit until the closing of Olympic Games on February 28, 2010.
Paralympic Torch Relay
The Paralympic Torch Relay started in Ottawa on March 3, 2010. It visited 11 communities across Canada before arriving in Vancouver on March 10, 2010, for a 24-hour relay through Vancouver before arriving for the opening of the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games on March 12, 2010. The Paralympic Flame took its place during the Paralympic Games at the Olympic Cauldron where it stayed lit until the closing of Paralympic Games on March 21, 2010.
