The demand for community gardens has never been greater. Residents have recognized the benefits of growing food and flowers in gardens around the city. The City of Vancouver would like to support the development of new community gardens, and has the capacity to assist community groups to set up a limited number of new gardens each year.

Community Garden Expression of Interest

The City of Vancouver is asking residents to send in expressions of interest to help identify potential new community garden sites. For instance, a potential site could be vacant land at the end of a block, land parallel to streets, areas of park, etc. The list of potential community garden sites will help prioritize community garden support for upcoming years.

Starting a new garden in a park

Approximately a quarter of Vancouver’s gardens are located within a city park. If you would like to start a new garden a neighbourhood park, please review the Park Board community garden policies and contact the Park Board directly. The Park Board typically requires a formal proposal with garden designs, as well as a community consultation in order to show the rational (and interest in) a garden project.

Note: the use of Park Board property is different than other city-owned land and is managed by Park Board staff.

Starting a new garden on privately owned lands

If you are interested in starting a community garden on a privately-owned lot, you need to secure the permission of the land-owner first. It is wise to do this with a written agreement that spells out the nature of your garden project and the anticipated duration of the garden. This last part is particularly important, as many land-owners are interested in supporting community causes but also want to retain the right to sell or develop their land at a later date. Spelling out the terms of the garden project can head off possible misunderstandings.

By completing the form below you will help us better understand what neighbourhoods have the most interest in community gardens, and help prioritize where future garden might be located. Your name will be placed on a list to be informed of newly City-owned land available for a community garden in your neighbourhood. We will contact you when land becomes available.

Important: this form will not put you on a waiting list for an existing community garden. In order to join an existing community garden you must contact the garden directly. View the list of contact details for current community gardens.
