Residents' guide to leaf collection - October 1 to January 31
Collect the leaves that fall onto your property, boulevard and sidewalk as this is the responsibility of residents and business owners. The City does not clean leaves, chestnuts, etc. off sidewalks.- Fill your yard trimmings cart (green lid) with your leaves and set it out on your scheduled yard trimmings collection day. Remember, no plastic bags or liners. Use a standard store-bought garbage can or a biodegradable paper bag for your extra leaves (those that don’t fit into your yard trimmings cart).Biodegradable paper bags can be purchased at most home and garden centres.
- Compost or mulch your leaves as an alternative to setting them out for the City to collect. For information on composting call the Compost Hotline at 604.736.2250.
- Move your vehicle off the street if the City’s leaf removal crews have posted temporary no-parking signs on your block. If your vehicle is not moved it may be towed (usually just around the corner) to allow crews to clean the street thoroughly.
- Do not rake or blow leaves onto the street. Raking or blowing your leaves onto the street is a violation of the Street and Traffic By-law. Leaves left in the street may cause flooding by blocking street drains, and may be a hazard to motorists and cyclists.
- Do not use plastic bags of any kind for your leaves. Leaves set out in clear plastic bags will not be collected.
