Basics of Apartment Recycling Program
The City of Vancouver's Apartment Recycling Program has been operating
since the Summer of 1999. The program enables residents in apartments,
condominiums, co-ops, townhouses and other multi-family buildings
to recycle the same materials as single-family residents (blue box program). The Apartment
program includes more than 156,000 residential suites and 4,800 multi-family
buildings in Vancouver.
The City contracted out apartment recycling collection service to Waste Management of Canada for areas in Downtown, Kitsilano, Fairview, and Mount Pleasant. The City provides apartment recycling collection service to the rest of the City.
Most multi-family buildings are supplied with wheeled carts for the collection of newsprint, mixed paper products and mixed containers. Each residential suite gets a reusable tote bag for storing and transporting recyclables to the wheeled carts. Although most apartment buildings and townhouses will use wheeled carts, some small multi-family buildings (5 suites or less) will use blue boxes and bags for their recyclables. On collection day, the recycling carts are emptied into different compartments of the collection vehicles and delivered to a processing facility for further sorting in preparation for the recycling market.

How Do I Register My Building?
If you own, manage, or live in a multi-family building in Vancouver that does not have recycling, please call 604.873.7190 or e-mail us at recycle@vancouver.ca (please include your daytime phone number).
Where Can I Get A Replacement/Additional Cart?
Please call 3-1-1 (or 604.873.7000 from outside Vancouver city limits).
What Does It Cost?
All residential properties share the cost of the City's recycling programs. For information on current fees, go to Fees or call 3-1-1 (or 604.873.7000 from outside Vancouver city limits).
When Is My Collection Day?
- If your apartment, condo or townhouse is serviced by City of Vancouver Crews, please go to City Apartment Recycling Schedule.
- If your apartment, condo or townhouse is serviced by the City's Contractor, Waste Management, please go to Contractor Collection Schedule.
- If you are not sure who is picking up the recyclables at your building, please call the City's Hotline at 3-1-1 (or 604.873.7000 from outside Vancouver city limits).
