How to Set Out Your Yard Trimmings
Please note that NO extra bags will be collected except during the unlimited leaf collection (Got Leaves) period in the Fall (October 1 - January 31).
On Your Collection Day
Set it out by 7:00 am. Set out your cart by 7:00 am in the lane or street you normally use to set out your yard trimmings (unless we have instructed you otherwise).
Crews begin work at 7:00 am. To find out your collection days, please check your collection schedule.
Point it. Place your cart so the arrow on the lid points
towards the centre of the lane or street (handle will face your property).
Space it. Place your cart so that there is at least 1m (3ft) of space on
all sides and 3m (10ft) of clearance above. Please remove or cut back any hedges or branches to provide clearance for our collection crews.
Bring it back in. After your cart has been emptied, remember to remove it off the lane or street and back to your property.
What We Accept
- leaves and grass clippings
- weeds, plants, and flowers
- branches and prunings less than 10 cm (4 inches) in diameter AND less than 0.5 m (1.6 ft) in length
Do not overfill your cart:
The lid on your cart must be closed completely. Overfilled carts will not be emptied. NO extra bags of yard trimmings will be collected except during the unlimited leaf collection period (October 1 to January 31).
An owner or an occupier must not fill a yard trimmings cart to a gross weight that exceeds the following:

Extra Yard Trimmings
If you have extra yard trimmings and your cart is full, consider the following options:
- If you have a vehicle, you may drop off your extra yard trimmings at the Vancouver South Transfer Station (VSTS) or the Vancouver Landfill (VLF) subject to a Fee.
- If you have a backyard at your property, you may want to purchase a composter (City subsidized) to compost the extra yard trimmings.
- If you constantly find yourself running out of cart space for extra yard trimmings, perhaps you may want to increase your cart size or order additional carts. Please call 3-1-1 (or 604.873.7000 from outside Vancouver city limits).
