Most Stanley Park Forest Trails Now Open to the PublicMarch 30, 2007 (No. 20) - More than 18 of the 23 kilometres of forest trails in Stanley Park are now open to the public. Since the devastating wind storm of last December which levelled almost 45 hectares of forest, staff have been working steadily to clear trails and assess the condition of standing trees that line the park's forest pathways. A number of trails will remain closed indefinitely because they are located in "blowdown" areas that will require more extensive remedial work or are not accessible by the machinery needed to carry out trail clean up. These include the following trails east of the Causeway: North Creek, Wren and Brockton Point Trails and the following west of the Causeway: Merilees, Siwash, Cathedral, the section of Tatlow between North Lagoon Drive and Bridal Trail and the section of Lees between Bridal and Tatlow Trails. A map detailing open and closed trails is available on the Park Board's web site. The public is asked to watch for temporary trail closures and respect barricades they may encounter as staff continue to carry out remedial work throughout the park. - 30 - For more information contact Carol DeFina, Communications Coordinator at 604-257-8440.
