Park Drive Realignment Planned for Stanley Park's Prospect Point Public Input Invited

November 23, 2007 (No. 59) - The public is invited to provide feedback on three landscape design options for the Prospect Point road realignment project being considered by the Park Board. The windstorm of last December caused massive damage to Stanley Park, but also created new opportunities for improvements. One of these is the relocation of Park Drive and parking lot away from the Prospect Point lookout, one of the busiest, most popular areas of the park. The storm levelled a forested area in front of the Prospect Point Cafe that has provided a clearing wide enough to relocate the road and parking.

The realignment project will have the least impact on park space while achieving three important things:

  • improved drainage through reduction of hard surfaces and run off that contributes to the erosion of the slopes above the seawall
  • increased safety for visitors who will no longer have to cross the road to get to the viewpoint and the road itself will have a less sharp turn
  • enhanced aesthetics by removing asphalt and adding more green space

These changes will result in no net increase in the number of parking spaces at Prospect Point - parking will be angled along the newly built road. The project will be done over the winter for completion by next spring.

The public can find more project information, view the three design options and offer feedback on their preferred design on the Park Board web site. Click on "Stanley Park Restoration," and then the "Feedback" page. Comments should be sent by December 1st, 2007.
