Realigned Park Drive at Prospect Point in Stanley Park Now OpenJuly 4, 2008 (No. 20) - The new section of Park Drive which is part of the Prospect Point Realignment Project is now open. The project involves the relocation of 140 metres of the hairpin curve of Park Drive and angle parking across from the restaurant. Drivers are urged to use caution as road work continues over the next few weeks and to park in the new parking lot adjacent to the realigned section of road, rather than along the roadway. New stalls along the new section of Park Drive are designated only for "hop on/hop off" buses such as the Stanley Park Free Shuttle. Tour buses will continue to use the same section of roadway east of the washrooms for parking. The next phase of the Realignment Project which involves removal of asphalt from the old section of Park Drive near the viewpoint is currently underway. During this phase of the project, pedestrians will still be able to access the terraced viewpoint via a walkway that runs in front of the Prospect Point Café and Gift Shop. The devastating windstorm of December, 2006 resulted in a massive blow down in the area adjacent to Park Drive across from the Prospect Point floral display. This provided an opportunity to create a new road alignment and parking lot in the footprint of the new forest clearing. The site design includes asphalt, curb and sidewalk work, storm sewer system and drainage improvements, a rain garden and site grading. The number of parking stalls has been maintained and the parking area has been separated by a landscaped median to improve public safety at one of Vanouver's busiest tourist destinations. - 30 - Contact: Carol DeFina, Communication Coordinator, 604-257-8440.
