October 1, 2008 (No. 55) - The Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation was the recipient of a special award from the Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM) at their annual convention last week. The Community Stewardship Award recognized the multi-faceted and comprehensive restoration of Stanley Park in the aftermath of the devastating December 2006 windstorm.

"Staff, partners, volunteers, donors and countless others have worked very hard with the clean-up, planning and continuing recovery of Stanley Park," said Park Board Chair Korina Houghton. "It is an honour to be recognized by UBCM for that effort." The Stanley Park restoration project is expected to be completed later this year.

Earlier this year the Park Board received the PERC Award for Innovation and Ingenuity from the British Columbia Recreation and Parks Association (BCRPA), also in recognition of the Stanley Park restoration.
