Digital Photography Workshop
Expand your photographic knowledge, technique, and understanding of a digital camera's functionality to improve your photos. This course will cover principles of digital photography and the common functions on digital cameras. Immerse yourself in fun, hands-on explorations of the complex and stunning world of plants. Plant Labs are held in VanDusen’s bright and beautiful new classroom in the Visitor Centre, and are designed as engaging and practical botany lessons with our local experts. Plant Lab: Conifers
Distinguish a spruce from a fir with ease after this Plant Lab. Hemlocks, cedars, cypress and pine trees will all be part of this exploration of conifers led by VanDusen staff botanist, Cynthia Sayre. Examine cones, needles, scales, buds and branches with microscopes and lenses. The lab will include a short walk outside to look at trees in the Garden.

Plant Lab: The Seeds we Eat
Corn is starchy, sunflower seeds are oily, and soybeans are full of protein. Explore seeds like you never have before by testing them for starch and dissecting a wonderful diversity of germinating seeds and seedlings in various stages of growth. See where the germ is in grains, how monocots differ from dicots, and the different ways plants store food reserves (that we love to eat) in seeds.

Plant Lab: Soil pH and Plants
A fun soil chemistry class exploring acids and bases in soils. Learn what pH is all about and how the soil pH affects plants’ ability to take up nutrients. Use different measures such as a pH pen and litmus paper to test the pH of soil from VanDusen or your garden. Bring in about 2 cups of soil from your garden (optional). Lab will include a short walk outside in the Garden to collect soil samples.

Plant Lab: Mosses and Lichens
False Pixie Cups, Witches Hair, Broom Moss - this isn’t fantasy, you’ve entered the world of mosses and lichens. Get a closer look at spore cases, peristome teeth and cell structure in mosses, and discover the essential symbioses of lichens. These plants are best seen through lenses and microscopes, when their intricately beautiful features become larger than life.

Plant Lab: Flower Dissection
This lab will be more than just beautiful and deliciously fragrant. Using hand lenses for up close examination of flower parts, discover the vast diversity in petals, sepals, stamens, pistils and more. Dissect flowers to find nectaries and ovules, refresh your botany of the function of different flower parts, and consider basic floral characteristics that attract specific pollinators.

Plant ID for Beginners
Knowing what characteristics to look for on plants and how to describe them are major components of plant identification. Botany on Bowen Island
Explore the botanical diversity around Killarney Lake as you walk through mature secondary growth forest, shoreline and riparian communities, and along the boardwalk covering marsh and swamp. Led by a botanist, this tour will introduce you to many B.C. native ferns, trees, and more. Tour will start at the library, 30m from the ferry dock (no car needed), and will finish in time to board the 4:00 ferry back to Horseshoe Bay. Consider making a day of it and visit Bowen’s many cafes, shops and galleries within easy walking distance of the ferry.

Delicious Designs – The Potager Garden
Essentially ornamental vegetable gardens, potager gardens combine the practicality of an English kitchen garden with the style and grace of French fashion. Plants are chosen for both their edible and ornamental natures and are put together in such a way that it looks pretty while still providing food for the household. This course will include hands-on exercises for planning and cultivating your own garden; and generating a concept design to implement in your own yard, balcony, or deck.
