Youth Programming
Vancouver Park Board welcomes youth to participate in all community centre programs. Depending on the level of support needed, a program may request that you provide your own one-to-one worker. Ball Hockey for Young Men 16+ years
West Point Grey Community Centre
Youth Ball Hockey is designed to provide a fun, safe and supportive environment for young adults (16+) with developmental disabilities. Contact norahflaherty@shaw.ca to discuss suitability of players, who must be able to understand 3-step directions, and attend without a one-to-one worker. No drop ins.
Basketball for Boys (DCYBA) 14-25 years
Marpole-Oakridge Community Centre
The Developmentally Challenged Youth Basketball Association (DCYBA) promotes and supports the development of youth with developmental challenges through basketball. Males 14-25 years old are welcome to join. Learn to play in a non-competitive fun environment.

The DCY Basketball Association promotes and supports the development of youth with developmental challenges through basketball. This program welcomes female participants to learn to play basketball in a fun, non-competitive environment.

Sledge Hockey

Open to male and female able bodied and disabled players. This course will cover basic introductory skills to play sledge hockey. Skills such as skating, turning, puck handling and shooting will be covered. Full hockey gear is recommended but helmet, gloves and elbow pads are mandatory.

Breaking through - Art Therapy 16-25 yrs
Art Therapy is psychotherapy combined with visual art. Through the creation of art and a discussion afterwards about the process, one can increase awareness of self, cope with stress and traumatic experiences, and enjoy the life affirming pleasures of artistic creativity. Participants will learn new techniques to use materials and mediums in their journey towards a greater self expression.

Dancing Stars 12-18 years
Dunbar Community Centre
Come and have the time of your life doing dance aerobics to music like Hannah Montana and High School Musical… music you won’t stop dancing to! Work on stretching, dance routines and much more! If you are a new participant an assessment interview is required, and some participants may be asked to provide their own 1 to 1 support.

Dunbar Community Centre
A combination of a segregated and integrated program; some activities are done by Stars only, and other times the group is integrated into special events that are happening for teens at the Centre. Opportunities are provided to develop social skills, confidence and the ability to interact in a group environment.

This is a social group that meets to participate in activities such as ice skating, swimming, cooking, crafts and much more! Participants will hang out and develop social skills with their new friends.

Move, Groove and Chill 13-19 years

We’ll stretch, breath, balance and relax through yoga. We’ll use martial arts techniques to punch, kick, and elbow. We’ll dance, as we move to beats from different parts of the world. Feel the joy of dance, the power of martial arts and the relaxation of yoga!

Saturday Unlimited 13-19 years
Britannia Community Centre
Saturday Unlimited is a unique program which offers recreational opportunities to youth with varying disabilities. Participants take part in a wide range of activities in and around the city, meeting new friends and acquiring new skills. Knowledgeable staff, in-program transportation and one to one volunteers are provided to maximize the youth's participation and enjoyment of the program. Different activities take place each week and include at least one evening event each session to enhance age appropriate activities.

Kitsilano Community Centre
TLC is youth recreation program located at Kitsilano Community Center for youth with mild disabilities who are currently attending school. TLC provides challenging activities and learning opportunities for youth and offers both after school programs and full time holiday programs.

Discovery Youth Program 13-18 years
Marpole-Oakridge Community Centre
Discovery Special Needs Youth Program is a summer recreation program for youth with mild developmental disabilities between 13 and 18 years of age. The program operates from 9am-4pm, Monday to Friday, during the months of July and August. During the summer, the participants will take part in a variety of active leisure pursuits, both on-site an in the community, with both personal and social benefits. The activities will educate and expose the participants to new experiences, which they may wish to continue independently of the program. The scheduled activities will assist in developing positive peer relationships and independence through integrated activities in the community.

Summer Hang Out 13 to 17 years
Renfrew Park Community Centre
Summer Hang Out is an exciting week-long program for high-functioning teens with developmental disabilities to meet new friends and have fun. The program will focus on developing positive peer relationships through interactive group activities such as games, crafts, gardening, adapted sports and weekly community out-trips. Participants will learn to build self-confidence and social skills in a safe and welcoming environment. Peer mentors will be present to interact and model positive social behaviour. This Program is Designed For Youth
- 13 years and up with a developmental disability who work well in a group setting
- If a participant requires one-to-one support, an assistant who knows the participant well and can facilitate inclusion should accompany them
- Able to participate in a 1:5 ratio (1 Staff to 5 Participants)
- Able to communicate and attend to personal care needs (using changerooms and washrooms independently etc.)
