Dog Ownership Education and Enforcement

The Park Board, Animal Control and Vancouver Police team-up to educate the community, raise awareness about being responsible and respectful dog owners and to enforce the dog by-laws. Dog by-law enforcement takes place at various park locations and on beaches throughout the year. Fines are issued to offenders to encourage compliance with the rules.

One of the most common complaints to the Park Board and to City Hall relates to dogs. There are an estimated 105,000 dogs in the city. In all, there are 35 off-leash parks in Vancouver for well-behaved canines. Responsible dog ownership helps dogs, dog lovers and non-dog lovers co-exist happily.

Top 5 dog tips for parks

1. Licence your dog.
A licence isn't just a fashion accessory, it helps identify your dog if it gets lost and licence fees collected support animal services.

2. Leash.
Make sure he's under control, too. Dogs are not permitted on beaches and within 15 metres of playground equipment.

3. Unleash.
There are 35 off-leash parks in Vancouver. Many areas are off-leash at set times only, so respect the signs. And don't forget to leash your dog on your way to or when leaving the off-leash area.

4. Pick up.
This is a no-brainer: No one wants to step in your dog's doo.

5. No digging!
