Emery Barnes Park Opens

Members of the Barnes Family unveil the sign at the opening
September 27, 2003 - The day dawned bright
and beautiful on Saturday September 27th when the Park Board officially
opened Vancouver's newest park. Located at the corner of Richards
and Davie Streets this elegant downtown space, comprising hardscaping
of water rills, fountains, granite and benches along with greensward
plantings, has been a hit with the public. Named for
Emery Barnes,
a long time community activist and member of the British Columbia Legislature
who served the residents of the city over a distinguished career, the
park opening drew more than 400 participants. They were entertained
by a full roster of music, dance and entertainment.
Roundhouse
Community Centre staff and community volunteers along with the
Vancouver
Rotary Club and
Choices Markets ensured that the event went
off without a hitch.
Cost to purchase the site for park purposes was $16 million
and was primarily funded through an area specific development cost levy.
Total first phase budget was about $1.4 million. The Rotary Club of
Vancouver contributed $50,000 toward the project.
