Public Invited to an Open House about Victory Square Park

April 24, 2002 (No. 29) - The Vancouver Park Board is considering park renewal options for Victory Square Park and is inviting the public to share their ideas regarding this historic downtown park. A Public Open House is scheduled for:

Saturday - April 27, 2002
2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Vancouver Community College
250 West Pender Street
(Main Entrance - Hamilton/Dunsmuir Streets)

The public can view renewal options being presented by the Park Board prior to the Open House. A design concept plan will be on display  in the centre of Vancouver Community College's main foyer from Wednesday - April 24 to Saturday - April 27, 2002.

On November 5, 2001, the Park Board approved a community-initiated project to add lighting to Victory Square . A further initiative was then begun to design and construct an overall upgrading of the park and to launch a fund-raising program to help pay for these further improvements. Consultants were retained to conduct a park heritage assessment report on the park. The design concept that will be presented at the public open house reflects the significant heritage decisions presented in the consultant's report.

Framed by some of the finest heritage buildings in the City, Victory Square Park is the connector between the downtown, Gastown and Chinatown. It was the first location of the courthouse and the point at which the survey was taken to establish the urban grid. The Square has great cultural significance as the location of the City's War Memorial Cenotaph and the site of the annual Remembrance Day observance.

Comments or requests for information regarding the project should be sent by April 29, 2002 to: Debra Barnes, Landscape Architect, Planning & Operations, phone: 604-718-5852 fax: 604-257-8365.
