Long Time Community Volunteer Receives Queen's Award

Tom Holmes Honoured

Tom Holmes honouredJanuary 27, 2003 - Thomas Holmes, long time community volunteer from the Sunset Community Centre Association and neighbourhood was recently honoured with the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal for his long years of dedicated volunteer service. The award was presented at a special ceremony by Vancouver-Langara MLA Val Anderson complete with RCMP Honour Guard. The Golden Jubilee Commemorative Medal awards mark the anniversary of Queen Elizabeth's 50 year reign and are part of the Canadian Honours System.

Tom has been active in his community for nearly four decades which started in the 1960s when he commenced coaching minor league sports. In the 1980s Tom worked with the residents of Sunset to resurrect the Sunset Community Centre Association. His efforts and guidance paved the way for the dynamic Community Centre Association which exists today. His many initiatives over the years continue to help provide ongoing recreation, leisure and social services to thousands of people in the Sunset community. Through his leadership the Sunset Community Association was also able to save the Moberly Hall by converting this facility to a new and vibrant Arts & Cultural Centre for the entire community to enjoy.

Volunteers like Tom Holmes and Community Associations like Sunset are essential partners for the delivery of Park and Recreation programs and services in Vancouver.
