Announcing the Artists for 2003 Artists-in-Residence Program

February 26, 2003 (No. 10) - Joey Mallett at Kensington Community Centre
Artist Joey Mallett will be working with community members in the Kensington area this year. An experienced muralist, Joey worked with youth from the Kiwassa Neighbourhood House to paint two historic murals in Hastings-Sunrise in 2002, sponsored by the Local Business Improvement Association. She has also worked with the Riley Park community to paint a 'Welcoming Wall' on the community centre and her murals grace walls at the Mid-Main Health Clinic and Mount St. Joseph's Hospital in Mount Pleasant.

Joey has studied and exhibited her work in Canada, the United States and Africa. She has worked as an artist-in-residence with the Vancouver School Board and Artstarts in Schools, Mortal Coil Performance Society, Secret Society and Vancouver Moving Theatre.

Ruth Jones at Kitsilano Community Centre
Ruth is an accomplished tapestry artist and muralist, she will be working with members of the Kitsilano community to explore the concept of peace. In the past she has led the creation of a community tapestry for the Dragon Boat Festival Society and worked on a commemorative tapestry that will hang in the Dr. Peter Centre at St. Paul's Hospital. Ruth has taught in elementary schools and coached graduates from Capilano College. Her murals have been commissioned for private residences and businesses as well as by the Crofton House School for Girls and Performance Works on Granville Island.

Ruth graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the San Francisco Institute of Art Honours Program and completed a Graduate Diploma in Tapestry Design from the National School for Decorative Art in Aubusson, France.

Cecilia Boisier at Renfrew Park Community Centre
Cecilia Boisier will be working with members of the Renfrew neighbourhood during a year that will also see renovations to the community centre. Cecilia has worked extensively in Collingwood-Renfrew area contributing to Arts Pow Wow and the 'Building Community through Cultural Expression: Arts Centre Project'. Her experience includes painting, collage, fabric arts, stamping and stenciling. She was an artist with the Evergreen Community Health Centre 'bodypArts' project and has created murals with youth for sites facing the SkyTrain and in schools as an artist with the Vancouver School Board Artist-in-Residence Program.

Cecilia graduated in Fine Arts and Education from the University of Chile in Santiago. She has exhibited her work in South America, Europe and Canada and has painted murals in Berlin, Amsterdam and Vancouver.

Marina Szijarto at Carnegie Centre
Artist Marina Szijarto will be working with Carnegie Centre and Vancouver Moving Theatre on the DTES Community Play Project. She will be working with neighbours from Main and Hastings, Strathcona, Gastown and Chinatown to create costumes and props for a major production written by and for the local community. Marina has worked on numerous community projects including the mosaic and banner 'Footprints Project' in the DTES, Strathcona's 'Circus of Dreams' and the 'Animal Parade' a series of community sculptures built with Strathcona School for the Vancouver International Children's Festival.

Marina graduated with a Foundation Arts Diploma from the Hereford College of Art and Design and a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from Loughborough College of Art and Design in the UK. She was nominated for three Jessie Awards in 1999/2000 and was a Jessie Winner in 2002 for Best Costumes for Small Theatre.
