Park Board Asks for Public Input on Reducing Pesticide Use on Our Lawns and Gardens

May 16, 2003 (No. 24) - The Vancouver Park Board is beginning a consultation process to identify different ways of reducing pesticides used to control weeds, insects and fungi on private gardens, lawns and trees. An important public meeting to hear the public's concerns, ideas and suggestions regarding pesticide reduction strategies will be held:

7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.
Tuesday - May 20, 2003
Multi-purpose Room
Kensington Community Centre
5175 Dumfries Street

The Park Board has taken a leadership role in the reduction of pesticide use on public lands since 1987 when an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) policy was adopted. Pesticide use in the parks system has been cut in half and no cosmetic pesticides are used on any neighbourhood park, playground or sports fields.

Last year a public education plan for alternatives to chemical pesticides was approved by the Park Board and City Council to promote reduction of pesticide use for private properties in Vancouver. Approval was also given to consult with the GVRD and our stakeholders for a regional approach to pesticide reduction.
