Park Board to Seek Injunction to End Victory Square Camp

July 24, 2003 (No. 40) - The Vancouver Park Board announced today that it has started legal action to seek an injunction to remove the encampment from Victory Square and to prohibit further camping in the park.

The Board's decision to ask for the assistance of the courts comes after exhausting all other measures to end the protest camp and return the historic park to the community.

Planned renovations to the park are ready to proceed. Construction will begin as soon as the site is cleared.

Park Board Chair Heather Deal said, "The Board wants a prompt resolution of the Victory Square situation and ask that the remaining protestors respect our request to leave immediately. Our goal is to have no future encampments in public parks. Parks should remain open and available to all residents and visitors as shared spaces, particularly in areas of the city where green space is limited."
