Park Board Seeks Injunction to End Thornton Park Camp

August 8, 2003 (No. 42) - The Vancouver Park Board announced today that it has started legal action to remove the encampment from Thornton Park. In a letter from the Park Board served on the squatters yesterday, they were given until noon today to vacate the park. They did not leave. The writ to seek an injunction was filed in BC Supreme Court this afternoon. The Board's decision to ask for the assistance of the courts comes after exhausting other measures to end the protest camp.

Park Board Chair Heather Deal said, "The Board still hopes the remaining protestors will leave voluntarily so that we can return Thornton to the community. Parks should remain open and available to all residents and visitors as shared space, particularly in areas of the city where green space is limited."
