Park Board and Community Centre Associations Announce the Artists for 2004 Artists In Residence Program

April 20, 2004 (No. 20) - Glen Andersen at West Point Grey Community Centre - Artist Glen Andersen will be working with community members in West Point Grey to explore and interpret the magical time and place created by the movement of the tides over the shoreline. During the next few months they will be studying and celebrating the landscape that is both revealed and concealed by the ocean. The resulting works will be presented and performed at the "InterTidal Arts Celebration" which will be held on the summer day with the longest intertidal period of the season. Everyone is invited to join the community on Spanish Banks West, Saturday, July 3rd. Glen has a long history as a community artist working in the lower mainland. Best known for his work with mosaics, Glen introduced pebble mosaic techniques to the city and has been involved in environmental works in locations such as John Hendry Park. Glen has also been a part of artistic teams with community celebrations such as Illuminares with Public Dreams at Trout Lake and the Luminara Festival in Victoria. For information, please contact Jennifer Swan, Programmer at West Point Grey Community Centre, 604-257-8147.

Tarrynea J. Biallecki at Trout Lake Community Centre - Clay artist Tarrynea J. Biallecki will be working with members of the Trout Lake community to create a tile mosaic for the centre. She writes, "Working with clay, old and young can move the earth, transform it to stone, and leave a lasting impression using the natural beauty of Trout Lake, its surrounding and the views of the North Shore Mountains." Tarrynea is a ceramics instructor, studio technician and longtime member of the Ceramics Club at Trout Lake Community Centre. She has done large scale tile mosaics with both the Tyee Elementary and Westcot Elementary School communities. For information, please contact Pam Andrews, Programmer at Trout Lake Community Centre, 604-257-6964.

Barbara Meneley at Moberly Arts and Culture Centre & Sunset Community Centre - Artist Barbara Meneley will be working with the community that gathers at both Moberly and at Sunset Community Centre. Together they will explore relationships between themselves and the landscape they inhabit. Collecting the surface textures of their environment through castings, rubbings, mapping and photography, they will create works that investigate and share their different perceptions of the neighbourhood and their passages through it. Barbara is an interdisciplinary artist with a wide range of experience in film, photography, performance, sculpture and installation. Recent works include the film 'Hello Neighbour' screened at the One Minute Film Festival in Toronto, and Bumbershimmer an ongoing installation at the Bumbershoot Festival in Seattle. For information, please contact Danita Noyes, Arts Programmer at Moberly Arts and Culture Centre, 604-718-6521.

Eric Neighbour at Killarney Community Centre - Community carving will be happening at Killarney Community Centre this year. Artist Eric Neighbour will be soliciting comments, stories and drawings representing the neighbourhood and familiarizing himself with the issues and attributes that make Killarney unique. After combining the drawings into cohesive designs, the carving will begin. The sound of carver's mallets tap-tapping on the steel gouges will invite passersby to have a closer look and perhaps to participate in shaping the wood into images which represent the spirit of the neighbourhood. Eric has been creating carvings with communities for over ten years. He has installed works in both Ontario and B.C.and has worked with science centres, schools and community centres. In Vancouver his community carvings can be seen at False Creek, Woodland Park and Harbour Green Park. For more information, please contact Debra Graham, Programmer at Killarney Community Centre at 604-718-8218.

The Artist In Residence Program is funded by the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation and Community Centre Associations.
