Ground Breaking Ceremony for New Sunset Community Centre

November 9, 2005 (No. 27) - A ground breaking ceremony will be held to mark the formal start of construction on a new community centre for Sunset. The Hon. Ujjal Dosanjh, MP, Vancouver South, Minister of Health; The Hon. Carole Taylor, MLA, Vancouver-Langara, Minister of Finance; Mayor Larry Campbell; Park Board Commissioner Anita Romaniuk and Sunset Community Association President Ken Thompson will participate in the ground breaking ceremony for the multi-use community centre anticipated to open in 2007.

The new 2800 m² (30,000 ft²) community centre, designed by Bing Thom Architects, will be built on Main Street on land that is now part of the Park Board's Sunset Nursery. Haebler Construction Ltd. has been awarded the construction contract. The $11.67 million project will include a gymnasium, fitness room, preschool areas, arts and crafts rooms and a youth lounge. This is a joint project between the Government of Canada, the Province of British Columbia, the City of Vancouver, the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation and the Sunset Community Association.
