June 8, 2009 (No. 29)
- The public is invited to the official opening celebration of Oak Meadows Park.
11am to 12pm
Saturday, June 13, 2009
Oak Meadows Park
(37th Avenue at Oak Street, just east of Oak Street)
The event will include cake, refreshments, entertainment as well as Ultimate sport demonstrations and information displays. The celebration will take place adjacent to the sports field near the 37th Avenue park entrance.
This five hectare (12 acre) park is located on the site of the former Shaughnessy Golf Course. The Park Board purchased the land, which also includes the land now occupied by VanDusen Botanical Garden, in the early 1960s. The park was redeveloped in 2007 to include a sports field that is suitable for both soccer and Ultimate. It also features a dog off-leash area, children's play area and meandering pathways through natural, treed areas. Panoramic views of Vancouver and the North Shore mountains are visible from parts of the park.
The name Oak Meadows was approved by the Park Board last fall following a new naming process led by a citizen-based Park Naming Committee. Over 60 name submissions were received from the public for this park. The name reflects the park's location on Oak Street and the sweeping, natural meadows that form part of the park space.
