Folk Stories of Familiar Plants

January 21, 10:30 – 12:00 (single time slot)

Celebrate hardy plants of the winter season from holly to the Christmas rose by exploring the garden and sharing folk tales.   Come together for this blend of plant stories, science, and craft as you make your own starch poinsettia to last the entire season!

Kids Corner at Seedy Saturday

February 25, Drop-in all day from 10-4

Join us at Seedy Saturday to explore a variety of seeds under the lens of a microscope from a human and a bug’s eye view!  Play seed bingo and make a seedy craft.

Kaleidoscope Eyes in VanDusen

March 17, 10:30 -12:00 (single time slot)

See a winter wonderland through a new perspective with your own hand-made kaleidoscope.  Engaging in the Reggio Emilia approach, children will freely create with access to unique materials or “charms” and will leave with a new tool to use in the garden, on long car rides and out any frosted window.

Calling all budding meteorologists!

April 21, 10:30 & 1:30 (AM and PM time slots)

On this adventure your family will practice being meteorologists by building your own rain gauge and weather vane.  After some practice with your hand-made tools and thermometers in the garden you will have everything you need for your very own backyard weather station!

Pond Dipping: The World Beneath The Lily Pads!

May 26, 10:30 & 1:30 (AM and PM time slots)

Anyone can dip, but can you identify? This year we will be dipping for whirling beetles, back swimmers and mayflies.  We will identify their trophic positions in the food chain and sketch what we find amongst and beneath the lily pads in our own layered mini books.

Spotlight on Turtles

June 16, 10:30 & 1:30 (AM and PM time slots)

Be sure to poke your head out for this adventure with VanDusen’s resident turtles.  Have you ever wondered what turtles eat or where they disappear to in the cold?  These questions and more will be explored through games, stories and observations.  You will also make your own duct tape turtle to take home!
