Definition:
Property dimensions are, for the most part, displayed in the legal unit of measurement indicated on the Land Titles Office registered plan which created the particular property or property line. Consequently, the maps display a combination of imperial measure (feet and decimals of a foot) and metric measure (metres and decimals of a metre). To differentiate between the two, all metric dimensions on the maps are followed by an "m". Registered plans since the late 1970s are in metres.
Curved property lines may be dimensioned in either of two ways, depending on the age and location of the subdivision: chord distance or arc distance. Chord distance (annotated "CHD") is a straight-line, corner-to-corner distance; while arc distance (not annotated) is the length around the curve, and will usually be accompanied by a stated curve radius (e.g. R=1200).
Road and lane widths reflect property-line to property-line widths, rather than constructed widths. Physical improvements such as paved surfaces, curbs, gutters, and sidewalks may be located anywhere within the property-line to property-line width. Occasionally, a dimension is followed by an "M", indicating a measured, or field dimension. This may be indicated when no registered dimension exists, or to highlight a discrepancy between a measured and a registered dimension (annotated, in this instance, with an "R").
