Vancouver Park BoardCommunity Information Exchange
October 28, 2002
Mount Pleasant Community Centre

This “information exchange” included a series of information “stations” which provided an opportunity for the community to talk with City, Park Board and Library staff about the specific issues related to the relocation of the community centre and the development of the new multi-service facility at 1 Kingsway. The following is a summary of responses to these issues.

Total Respondents: 32

The Pool

Closing the pool is detrimental to the health and welfare of children.
The unique value of outdoor pools has not been taken into consideration in the planning process.
Keep the pool. (7)
Increase fees to cover operating costs of pool. (3)
Reallocate funds from Percy Norman to this pool.
Look at cost-effective solar heating options for the pool
It is a great meeting place for the neighbourhood.
Likes the indoor/outdoor option for new Percy Norman.
More info about the Percy Norman development

The Preschool/Daycare

Childcare and preschool for Simon Fraser catchment area need to stay on site. (10)
The travel distance to the new facility for childcare and preschool is a concern. (2)
Closing the childcare and preschool will affect enrollment at Simon Fraser, and jeopardize the existence of the school.(4)
It “flies in the face” of current VSB boundaries to make kids cross major streets and intersections to get to childcare.
Free childcare open till 11p.m.

The Old Site

Look for innovative ways of keeping the building, perhaps by partnering with non-profits
Put the library at 16th and Ontario instead.
Keep the building, but since would require less parking would allow for more green space.
Improve the playground.
If CC has to go, expand school building
Turn building into an Olympic hostel, and services can occupy before and after 2010.
Consider a skateboard facility for this site.
Keep limited recreation and other activities on site.
A park will bring crime to the site.

The New Site

Building no more than 6 stories tall
Social Housing included in development (2)
The move to Kingsway makes sense.
Make the area around the new center more pedestrian friendly.
Needs green space.
Concerned about safety, parking and access.(2)
Pollution
Concern about high traffic location for kids (2)
Will not use at this location.

Programming

Include a community kitchen
Run groups for people with aphasia
Cheaper classes
Importance of free community meeting space in new facility.
Multipurpose auditorium that would accommodate theatre and music.

Public Process

Public process on land acquisition wasn’¹t there
Listen to the community/develop and implement a community input process (3)
Process needs to be more open and transparent
Please keep neighbours informed
Personal contact is better than newsletters
Info exchange disperses energy and doesn’¹t capture residents’¹ ideas or concerns.
Full consultation of services and future of 16th and Ontario site
Filled in a survey and asked to be contacted was not.
Give 6 weeks notice of meetings

Other

Development of a 5 10 year transition plan.
This is a good idea. Congratulations on the work so far.
