All are invited to come and view the centre and enjoy the facilities which include a library, fitness centre, large gym with climbing wall, Games Room and other great amenities. Mount Pleasant Parks and Recreation (October, 2009) Now Available and Public Invited to Share Ideas on the Future of Mount Pleasant ParkThis is our second newsletter to keep you updated on new parks and recreation facilities in and around your community. In our first issue we gave you a bird’s eye view of the new Community Centre, the heart of the new multi-service civic centre at 1 Kingsway. We provided some history on the long term planning for recreation facilities in your community. We also answered your questions about Mount Pleasant Park, the old building and the pool. In this issue we want to share more of the details about your new Community Centre and the Aquatics Centre at Hillcrest Park. Mount Pleasant Community Centre opens its doors next month. The Aquatic Centre opens next spring. What is the future for Mount Pleasant Park, the old building and the pool? Mount Pleasant Parks and Recreation News Hot off the Press, August, 2009This newsletter provides an update on the exciting new recreation facilities nearing completion in and around the Mount Pleasant neighbourhood. More than a decade of research, planning, consultation and construction has gone into the creation of these facilities. The newsletter includes background and updates on the stunning new Community Centre located at 1 Kingsway and the new destination Aquatic Centre at Hillcrest Park and answers some important questions about the projects. The newsletter is also available at the Mount Pleasant Community Centre. Watch for future editions and more information about how you can get involved in upcoming public consultations on the future of the old Mount Pleasant Community Centre and the 16th and Ontario site Mount Pleasant Community Centre Association Is Appointed Child Care Operator - April 21, 2009The Mount Pleasant Community Centre Association (MPCCA) was appointed by Council as operator of the new Child Care Centre at 1 Kingsway. Many parents have put their name on a wait-list for child care spaces; this list is being transferred to MPCCA. Once this has been done it will be announced in this space. Until it is transferred, West Coast Child Care Resource Centre will continue to manage it. Mount Pleasant Centre Nearing Completion & Photo Updates - February 13, 2009The building is now in the finishing stages and work is progressing throughout the complex. The suites should be ready for occupancy this summer, while child care, community centre, and library programs are expected to start this fall. Child Care Operator Westcoast Withdraws; New Operator to be Selected - June 5, 2008Westcoast Child Care Resource Centre has decided to relinquish it's role as operator of the child care program at the Mount Pleasant Centre at 1 Kingsway. Westcoast was committed to providing an innovative, state of the art quality child care program. Unfortunately, the anticipated policy and funding from senior levels of government did not materialize. To facilitate the transition, Westcoast will continue to manage the wait-list until a new child care operator is selected by the City. Proposals will be solicited in June 2008; this process is expected to be completed by the end of September 2008. Website Updated - April 10, 2008The website has been updated to include recent construction photographs, the new contact for the Child Care waitlist, the revised subtrade list, as well as the latest estimate for the opening of the facilities - early 2009. 1 Kingsway Project featured at Sustainable Building Symposium in Alberta - May 30 to June 1, 2006The Canada Green Building Council requested that the 1 Kingsway project be presented at the Sustainable Buildng Symposium hosted by the Alberta Chapter of the Canada Green Building Council. The presentation material is now posted the 1 Kingsway website. Council Approves Contractor - July 19, 2005Council has approved Vanbots Construction Inc. to build the new Mount Pleasant Civic Centre. Construction should start within weeks. Completion is scheduled for Spring 2007 the facilities would then open a month later. Public Art Competition Results Announced - May 12, 2005Artist Fiona Bowie with Rebecca Belmore and Sidney Fels were recently awarded a public art commission for an electronic media project to be integrated into the architecture of the Mount Pleasant Civic Centre at 1 Kingsway. Three local artist teams were short-listed by a selection panel to develop proposals for the $180,000 commission. The selected Bowie, Belmore, Fels team will bring a high level of collective artistic and technical expertise to realizing their project entitled, Flow. Flow will conflate past and present through a dynamic blending of projected imagery onto shifting architectural surfaces and landscapes. The flow of cyclical, social and natural rhythms will be represented in an ever-changing visual tableau.
