City Hall Campus Improvements

Proposed site upgrades concept plan

Proposed upgradesTree legendCurrently, Facilities Design and Management is preparing a master plan for the creation of an updated city hall building, which will help define the character and long-term use of the north lawn. Therefore, the site proposals are modest and will not adversely impact achievement of future development. The scope of work offers cost effective measures to improve the transition from the new Cambie streetscape improvements to the north lawn.

The proposal is to improve the visual and physical access to the City Hall precinct from Cambie Street to 10th Avenue, and along 10th Avenue, by implementing the following changes:

  1. ENHANCE CORNER OF 10th AVE AND CAMBIE ST
Create a welcoming entry point for visitors arriving from the new Skytrain station at the corner of Broadway and Cambie Street. This includes replacing the existing, deteriorated concrete stair and adding lighting, seating and signage. Three existing mid size trees will be relocated to become street trees along Cambie Street and three small trees will be relocated and incorporated into the new landscape design.
  2. IMPROVE ACCESSIBILITY ALONG WEST EDGE OF NORTH LAWN
Improve the visual and physical connection between the sidewalk and the north lawn. This includes regrading the west area of the north lawn to reduce the elevation difference as it approaches the sidewalk, replacing four trees and overgrown vegetation with two long rows of trees along the west edge of the north lawn, widen the sidewalk along the edge of the lawn, and create several easy-access pathways with proper planting, lighting and seating.
  3. IMPROVE NORTH LAWN EXISTING PATHWAY
The existing asphalt pathway will remain, but will be enhanced by the addition of new benches and lighting for a more pleasant lower entrance to City Hall.
