Can I volunteer with Vancouver Animal Control?
Yes. Animal Control has a few different volunteer opportunities where you can lend a helping hand. Volunteers are always welcome to help with animal socialization, rabbit cuddling and dog walking.
To become a volunteer, visit our website to find out when our next available orientation session is scheduled. Each new volunteer is required to attend an orientation session where you will be provided with an orientation of the shelter and you will have an opportunity to positively interact with the dogs and other animals available for adoption. Our volunteers find this to be a rewarding experience and their commitment greatly contributes to the physical and psychological well being of our adoptable dogs and rabbits.
Is Animal Control the same as the SPCA?
No, it is not.
Animal Control is part of The City of Vancouver Community Services division, and is responsible for the enforcement of Vancouver’s animal-related by-laws. The BC SPCA is responsible for enforcing the BC Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, and investigates issues related to animal cruelty.
Both organizations shelter animals, operate volunteer programs and have pets available to be adopted by the public.
Animal Control and the BC SPCA work closely together to advocate responsible pet ownership and share a genuine concern for the welfare of animals.
Animal Control does not accept surrendered animals. If you need to surrender your pet, please contact the SPCA.
