Special Inspections

A Special Inspection is a service provided by the Building Inspections Branch which is a visual survey of an existing building to determine general code compliance, upgrading requirements, or the suitability of a proposed change of occupancy under the Vancouver Building By-law. Based on the applicants proposal the Special Inspection generates a report which will itemize any upgrading requirements and whether permits are required for the work. This survey is often used to help an applicant who is starting or moving a business to determine the suitability of a space in a building and whether any upgrading is necessary.

A special inspection may also be required if the building has been inappropriately altered (grow-op), damaged by fire or unoccupied for a long period of time.
