Work Without Permit

The Inspection Branch is committed to encouraging code compliance through the Permitting and Inspections process. Occasionally home owners and contractors, in their excitement and wish to get started, ''forget" to obtain permits or "overlook" this important requirement. Sometimes contractors and especially home owners misunderstand whether or not a permit is required for their particular project. If you are unclear about your project's permit requirements we strongly encourage you to phone the Inspections Branch and speak to Ron Dyck (604.873.7174) or the Enquiry Centre at 604.873.7611 for clarification.

When work requiring a permit begins before a permit is issued a Work Without Permit Fee is imposed (usually double the original permit fee). In addition the building may be posted with a Stop Work Order and be further delayed as the permit application makes its way through the various review processes.
