How to use the maps
What do all those numbers and symbols in the
grave name mean and how do I use them to find a grave?
There are typically 5 fields used to describe a grave (Section, Range,
Block, Plot and Lot). We use the "/" to separate these values
hence the location Horne1/3/02/025/0011 represents Section Horne1, Range
3, Block 2, Plot 25 and Lot 11.
How many SECTIONS are there in Mountain View?
We have 9 sections - Horne1, Horne2, Old, Abray, Jones, Masonic, IOOF,
KP and 1919
(by the way, IOOF stands for International Order of Odd Fellows, and KP
stands for Knights of Pythias - the two fraternal groups that started these
sections)
Why do some names have an "*" in them?
Not all sections or graves use all 5 fields in their naming system. For
example, only the Horne1 and Old sections use the RANGE field, all others
will have a "*" after the first "/" (e.g. Jones/*/22/015/0012)
Why do some of the numbers have one or more "0"'s
in front of them?
The 'leading zeros' are used in our cemetery software to sort the lots
in order, you can ignore them (except in the case where only a "0" appears,
we do have some areas in Horne1 and Old that actually have a RANGE 0 and
in the JONES section there is a BLOCK 0)
On the maps, where do I look to find which numbers?
The numbers appear in order from the largest area to the smallest lot.
Look first for the SECTION. Then look for the large number in the general
area of that section (the RANGE or BLOCK). The small rectangles on the
map are always the PLOT number. The last number in the series (typically
something like "/0012") represents the LOT and these numbers
do not appear on the map.
How many graves are in each of the smallest rectangles
on the map?
A standard size PLOT (the smallest rectangles) contains 16 LOTS (numbered
0001 through 0016). Some PLOTS contain more (such as 0001A or 00016A)
and others contain less. The layout of these 16 LOTS within each PLOT
varies depending on the SECTION.
How do I find a grave that has no PLOT, like
Jones/*/25/*/1256?
First find the JONES section, then find BLOCK 25. The grave 1256 is a pathway
grave that lies between the PLOTS running north to south.
