Guiding the Future with the Help of the Past
Arts & Culture Advisory Committee Survey
In 2011, Vancouver City Council recommended establishing a committee which will advise on all civic programs that relate to arts and culture. Take the survey and help shape an Arts and Culture Advisory Committee for Vancouver.
Policy
Vancouver is a young, dynamic and innovative city – a city where cultures from around the globe meet to experiment in intercultural exchange and innovation, pushing the boundaries of our emerging creative economy. We are undeniably a Creative City!
In January 2008, Vancouver City Council approved the New Culture Plan - a strategy aimed at sustaining and further supporting our burgeoning creative sector.
Though the plan’s creation was guided by a task force composed of community members and senior City staff, it was Vancouver’s creative community that provided the critical input for the creation of this important living document.
Planning
Creation of policy is just the beginning step towards working towards the development of a vibrant cultural landscape for Vancouver's citizens. Extensive planning is required for the development and implementation of ideas that strengthen and enliven our city to the benefit of its citizens. An example of these efforts is the ongoing work being done to revitalize the City's Downtown Eastside (DTES) neighbourhood through the Great Beginnings project.
Research
Supporting the development of policy and the activities of planning is research done by City staff and our cultural colleagues around the globe. Here one can find copies of our annual reviews from 1997 to present in addition to other items produced by Cultural Services over the years.

Do you have a great idea for an arts project in the Downtown Eastside?
Is it a project that celebrates the history, heritage and culture of Vancouver’s first neighbourhoods—Gastown, Chinatown, Japantown, and Strathcona?
