Rediscover Granville

Thank you to everyone who joined us last summer and made the launch of Rediscover Granville such a success. We look forward to opening up the street for you again in the future.

Please check back for updates, and enjoy the photos of last summer’s festivities.

What is Rediscover Granville?

Rediscover Granville opens up the street as pedestrian zone, for five blocks between Smithe and Hastings, where people can play, walk, shop and relax on weekends during the summer. Scheduled programming includes an exciting mix of free events and activities that create a unique opportunity for healthy recreational activities to take place in the heart of downtown Vancouver.

Events and activities last summer included:

  • Dancing
  • Art lessons
  • Concerts
  • Street hockey
  • Markets
  • Exhibits

Taking vehicles off of the street creates space for increased public seating and extended business patios down the street.

Benefits

Health Benefits

Scheduling a series of healthy activities on Granville gives people more opportunities to be active. Keeping the street closed to vehicle traffic creates more space to play downtown and lets people start their own activities.

Environmental Benefits

A pedestrianised Granville gives people the opportunity to try out more active forms of transportation, like biking and walking. Also, fewer cars on city streets means a reduction in greenhouse gas.

Economic Benefits

Car-free streets and a variety of activities happening all summer creates a sense of excitement around the freshly redeveloped Granville Street, as people come to see what’s new. Opening up Granville for pedestrian use encourages exploration of the street and increases access to local businesses.

Community Building

Rediscover Granville 2.010 will strengthen culture and community connections, with displays of art, dance and music from a diverse mix of performers. Removing cars from the street also creates a safe space for individuals and families to explore an iconic Vancouver neighbourhood, meet new people and be physically active.
