Homelessness Action Week 2011Homelessness Action Week
October 10 - 16, 2011

The City of Vancouver joins communities and organizations throughout Metro Vancouver, BC and the Yukon to mark the 6th annual Homelessness Action Week (HAW).

Homelessness Action Week is organized by the Greater Vancouver Regional Steering Committee on Homelessness, a coalition of community organizations and all levels of government focused on a goal of inspiring and leading a co-ordinated response to homelessness in the region.

The theme of this year's Homelessness Action Week is Investing in What Works. This positive theme builds on the success revealed be a one per cent decline in the overall regional homeless count since 2008 (based on the preliminary 2011 count data). This was accented in Vancouver with a six per cent decline since 2010.

The City of Vancouver is committed to ending street homelessness and is a proud supporter and participant in Homelessness Action Week through a number of events and initiatives.

Homeless Connect

Homeless Connect days are special events designed to give people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness access to a wide range of health and other support services all under one roof.

The City will be among other organizations province-wide that will host special events to provide free services for the homeless including: food, foot care, haircuts, hearing tests, pet care, street nurses, and bike repair. The events are also an opportunity to connect with service providers and gather information on employment, housing and health while in a welcoming atmosphere with food, music and other entertainment.

The City of Vancouver will be hosting two Homeless Connect events:

  • Gathering Place Connect
Wednesday, October 12 from 11 am to 2 pm
    609 Helmcken Street

  • Vancouver Homeless Connect
    Friday, October 14, 11am to 4pm
151 W Cordova Street (Old Storyeum Building)

On September 22, 2011, Vancouver City Council approved the allocation of $25,000 in grants to organizations to create awareness and engage citizens on solutions to homelessness through a variety of events and initiatives for the homeless.
