City-owned Site: 111 Princess Avenue (formerly 590 Alexander Street)

111 Princess Avenue is one of twelve sites being developed under a Memorandum of Understanding (Downloadable PDFPDF, 272KB) between the City and the Province (BC Housing), a partnership that would see BC Housing fund the preconstruction costs for the development of 1100 – 1200 social and supportive housing units on 12 City-owned sites. According to the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) agreement between the Province and the City of Vancouver, funding for the City-owned sites will include half of the net proceeds from the redevelopment of Little Mountain. The funding for this project was approved by the Province on May 25, 2010.

This site consists of 3 lots with a total area of 9,000 sq. ft. (75 ft. x 120 ft.). It is within the Downtown Eastside Oppenheimer District (DEOD) ODP (sub-area 4). The site was occupied by Marie Gomez Place, a 76 unit social housing project which was demolished by BC Housing pursuant to an agreement approved by City Council on September 18, 2007 (see Report in table below). This development will be made up of 139 small studio apartments of 200-250 sq. ft. and be low barrier housing. Sufficient amenity space would be provided to accommodate a kitchen and dining area and the necessary support for a low barrier project. Meals would be provided. Most of the units would accommodate persons with a mental health and/or substance abuse problem. All units will be tenanted by core-need singles with a priority for those living in the shelters and (SRO) hotels in the Downtown Eastside. PHS Community Services Society has been selected as the sponsor for this project.
