Community Services is a group of departments who provide a wide range of services for the citizens, business and tourists of Vancouver. Up to 300 temporary/part-time/auxiliary employees in addition to over 600 regular full-time staff use a broad range of skills and perform a variety of work including:

  • the operation of City Theatres that provide venues for cultural and entertainment performances
  • inspection and regulation of businesses, buildings, property use, electrical, plumbing and gas by-laws to ensure public safety
  • operating an animal shelter
  • planning and developing a livable and sustainable city
  • building public policy through community consultation and partnership
  • working with other municipalities and the GVRD, where collaborative planning is essential to enhance and sustain our world-renowned city

Auxiliary Employment

We are accepting applications for the following auxiliary positions, Audience Services and Stage Door and Kennel Attendants.

Audience Services and Stage Door
Audience Services (Front of House / Concessions) and Stage Door Attendants work on a casual basis at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, Vancouver Playhouse and Orpheum in downtown Vancouver.

The Audience Services division includes both Front-of House and Concession positions – Ushers, Ticket Takers, Coat Checkers, Bartenders and Concession Attendants.

For scheduling purposes, you are required to be available four (4) evenings per week. Friday and Saturday evenings are mandatory; the other two evenings are your choice.

Qualifications:
You must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Customer service experience is preferred.

Applications are accepted all year round. Our peak hiring season is in August / September for the theatre season (October-June). Please clearly indicate the position you are applying for.

The City seeks qualified trades people who are interested in starting a career as an Inspector in the various disciplines noted below. Position availability varies throughout the year. If trades positions are available they will be listed under Current Employment Opportunities. Building, Electrical, and Plumbing and Gas Inspectors regulate and inspect under a wide range of municipal by-laws, provincial legislation and codes related to business, building, electrical, plumbing and gas, sewer use and environmental protection. Inspectors work at City Hall and must be able to travel within assigned areas of the city.

To qualify as an Inspector, you must have:

  • A keen interest in public service and safety
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills
  • A minimum of 10 years journeyman trades experience
  • Experience at the foreman level is a definite asset

Building Inspectors - 10 years as a journeyman carpenter and current knowledge of building codes also required

Electrical Inspectors – 10 years as a journeyman electrician, preferably in all types of construction, and a certificate of qualification issued by the Provincial Electrical Safety Manager.

Plumbing and Gas Inspectors – 10 years as a journeyman plumber and experience as a gas fitter is required. Experience in a trade’s foreman capacity and trades experience as a sprinkler fitter is preferred.
