Introduction

The common rodents found in the Lower Mainland are the Norway Rat (brown rat), the Roof Rat (black rat) and the House Mouse. They are prolific breeders. Therefore, the problem of occasional invaders must be tackled immediately or a severe infestation will occur.

Whether you own property or rent, live or work in City of Vancouver; everyone has a role in rat prevention by proactively cleaning up, disposing garbage and composting properly plus maintaining buildings and yards.

The purpose of the following information serves as a guide to inform the public about rats and on ways to control rat infestation.

If you observe a rat infestation in or adjacent to a food premise such as a restaurant, grocery store, cafeteria or food manufacturing plant, you may contact the Vancouver Coastal Health at 604.675.3800 to file a complaint. If you observe a rat infestation in your rental home or in the lane, you may contact Property Use Inspections Division at 604.873.7398 to file a complaint.
