Mission Statement
The Building Inspections Branch is committed to serving the public interest in building safety, health and welfare by advancing compliance with the Vancouver Building By-Law and associated regulations thereby providing a safe working and living environment for the people of Vancouver.
Role of the Building Inspections Branch
This Branch is responsible for the administration and enforcement of:
- The Vancouver Building By-law
- Vancouver Zoning and Development By-law
- Sign By-law
- Parking By-law
- Tree Retention By-law
- Other associated bylaws related to construction
Key Functions of the Building Branch
The Building Inspections Branch which consists of a Management Team, 21 District Building Inspectors, and Secondary Suite and Grow-Operations Inspectors, through the permitting process, carry out inspections of buildings under construction or alteration within their assigned districts.
The 21 Disrict Building Inspectors carry out the inspections of the following:
- Construction of one and 2 family dwellings and other buildings falling under Part 9
- Construction of all types of larger building falling under Part 3
- Demolition work under permit
- Tree protection barriers while under construction
- Sign Installation and conformance under the sign by-law
- Installations related to Occupancy Permit applications
- Conformance to the Green components of the Vancouver Building By-law
- Complaints involving work without permit
- Complaints involving problems on construction sites
