Licence Transfers

If you would like to take over an existing business, you will be required to complete and submit a Business Licence Application for Transfer Form (89kb) with payment of the appropriate fee to transfer an existing licence to your name. Home-based business licences are not transferable.

To transfer a business licence, the following criteria must be met:

• The new business taking over must be for the same type of business that the previous business was licensed as (e.g., Restaurant to a Restaurant)
• Transfer of a licence can only occur once per calendar year
• Transfer form must be completed by both the existing and the new business owner
• Various approvals may still be required by the Police, Fire and/or Health Departments
• Transfer fee is $126

Processing Time

The time required to process a licence transfer can vary, depending on the type of licence and the time of year. If ALL requirements and approvals have been met, an application for transfer made in person can be issued on the same day and an application that is received by fax, mail, or email may take 2-3 weeks for processing. An application that is received during the licence renewal period (from November to February) may take 6 - 8 weeks for processing.
