The completed Community Visions all contain directions for improvements to their key shopping areas and directions for new housing types in various locations. Together these directions address the provision for neighbourhood centres first described in CityPlan. Neighbourhood Centres are where shopping, services and new housing come together. The second neighbourhood centre to be implemented is the Norquay Village Neighbourhood Centre. Over the next year, staff will work with Renfrew-Collingwood residents and business owners to create housing area and public realm plans for Norquay Village. For more information, contact Abigail Riley, 604.873.7461, norquayvillage@vancouver.ca. [top] Renfrew-Collingwood Transportation Committee
Local residents are working with City staff and other transportation groups to improve pedestrian safety and to mitigate traffic problems. The committee is currently working to improve conditions on Vanness between Joyce and Rupert and looking at issues, concerns and possible improvements that can be pursued with TransLink and the City of Vancouver. [top] Future of Fire Hall 15 (Nootka and 22nd Ave.)
Fire Hall 15 is a historic building in a neighbourhood with limited heritage architecture. Built in 1913, It is the only “craftsman” style fire hall in its original condition remaining in Vancouver. The Fire Department has requested funding from the upcoming Capital Plan to build a new hall. The City’s Facilities Department is hiring a consultant to undertake a detailed review of the heritage significance of the building and will be presenting its findings to the public. Retention of the existing fire hall is also being explored by the City. The community is supportive of preserving this historical building. [top] East 25th & 26th Greening Initiative
The residents in the 2900 block of East 25th and 26th hosted a highly successful neighbourhood cleaning and greening party. Local residents, students, and community groups volunteered to help clean-up Renfrew Ravine and beautify the neighbourhood with plants and native shrubs. The planting party strengthened community spirit and brought local residents together around a common purpose. [top] The Renfrew Ravine Moon Festival
A community initiated event to raise awareness about the environmental issues in the Renfrew Ravine and to celebrate multicultural diversity. Activities include performances, art displays, a harvest fair, fireworks, and a parade through the Renfrew Ravine to the Renfrew Park Community Centre. For more information, visit www.moonfestival.net. [top] Slocan Park Improvement Committee
Residents living near Slocan Park have been working with City staff to revitalize and beautify the park. The Duchess Walkway—a paved pathway linking Duchess Street on the south side of the park with the 29th Ave. SkyTrain Station – was constructed in 2003. Features of the Walkway include improved lighting, a totem pole, resident art components, and landscaping. Projects underway include playground improvements and the construction of a covered area. Residents and City staff are working on a design for the covered area that will accommodate both the seniors who practise Tai Chi in the park year round and community groups who wish to hold festivals in the park. [top] Windermere Secondary School Student Environment Club (SEC)
The SEC at Windermere Secondary School is a group of thirty students who are active in improving their school and community. They have developed a plan to beautify the area in front of their school with plants and art. In March 2005, the SEC applied for and received a Neighbourhood Matching Fund for their school beautification project. The group is currently working on their garden design and hoping to plant this late spring. The group is also working with City Staff to improve the street condition around their school. [top] |
