Greenway Avalon Neighbourhood GreenwayOn June 16 2006, Major Sam Sullivan officiated the opening of the Avalon Neighbourhood Greenway. The Avalon Neighbourhood Greenway, which connects Clarendon Street and Wales Street along 43rd Avenue, was approved by City Council in 2004 and began construction in the fall of 2005. The community-initiated project is designed to enhance local connections and reflects both the character and heritage of the neighbourhood through public art installations.
[top] Tecumseh Park Improvement SubcommitteeTecumseh neighbourhood residents celebrated the approval of funding for park improvements with a Strawberry Tea on June 4, 2006. The Tecumseh Park Improvement subcommittee successfully involved residents in neighbourhood meetings and a design workshop to develop ways to improve the park, which were submitted to the Park Board in September 2004. Funding for park improvements were approved in November 2005 and design should take place with the community in late 2007, construction to follow.
[top] East Fraserlands Subcommittee
Residents from Champlain Heights and Fraserlands formed the East Fraserlands Committee in July 2003 to fulfill a need by the community for more timely public consultation on the East Fraserlands development proposal. The Committee meets on a regular basis with the proponent and City staff to discuss the proposal and develop a consultation process that meets the needs of the community. The group has successfuly introduced major improvements to the plan on the community’s behalf. For more information on the East Fraserlands proposal and planning process, please click here. [top] Traffic SubcommitteeThe Traffic Committee meets monthly to discuss ways to improve pedestrian safety and calm traffic on major streets in VFK. Some initiatives include: the installation of zebra stripes and curb bulges on Kerr Street at 55th and 56th Avenues, improvements to the Red Alder crosswalk on Southeast Marine Drive, and the construction of slow down signs at unsafe intersections. The Committee is currently focusing their attention on improving conditions on East 54th Avenue and Champlain Crescent (between 54th Avenue and Champlain Heights Annex Elementary School). [top] VFK ListserveThe Victoria-Fraserview/Killarney Listserve allows members of the community to participate in discussions through an e-mail list. Your list serve subscription is free by sending an e-mail to vfk-list@vancouvercommunity.net with the words “subscribe vfklist” only in the body of the message. [top] Killarney Heritage Project The Killarney Heritage Project consists of a small group of local residents
interested in documenting the history of Killarney through photographs,
stories and memorabilia. By capturing history and celebrating it through
a vareity of expression, the group hopes to raise awareness of Killarney’s
contribution to Vancouver’s history. If you have old photos of the
Killarney area, or stories to share, please contact Catherine Buckham [top] The Clark/Knight Corridor Project Clark Drive and Knight Street provide a vital transportation corridor through the City. The purpose of the The Clark/Knight Corridor Project is to examine the function and operation of the entire route, reconciling the street’s transportation function with neighbourhood livability. In March 2005, City Council approved the Clark/Knight Corridor Plan. The Plan recommends improvements which seek to improve livability and safety along this busy arterial street while recognizing its use as a major street for goods movement and commuter traffic. [top] Victoria Drive Business Improvement AssociationOn February 3, 2004, City Council approved an appliation by the Victoria Business Improvement Association to establish a Business Improvement Association (BIA) representing 17 commercial blocks of Victoria Drive from 32nd Avenue to Nassau Drive. Improvements to the area's physical appearance, business vitality, cleanliness, and safety and security will be made possible through a special commercial property tax. [top] Bobolink Park SubcommitteeResidents of the Bobolink Park area have been working with the South Vancouver Community Policing Centre and Engineering Services to increase safety and slow traffic around the park. In the summer of 2002, volunteers from the CPC and residents of the Bobolink Park area joined forces to form a foot patrol. The “Pajama Patrol” toured the park at night, discouraging late-night partying and other activities. Residents also formed neighbourhood Block Watch groups to monitor safety on an ongoing basis. In the winter of 2003, residents began working with City staff on a traffic calming plan to slow traffic and discourage drag racing on the streets surrounding the park. A variety of traffic calming measures, including speed humps, speed tables and corner bulges will be installed in the summer of 2004. For more information on traffic calming measures for the Bobolink Park area, please click here. [top] Nanaimo Park Subcommittee
Residents living near Nanaimo Park have been working with the Park Board and Engineering Services to make the park more user-friendly and the streets and sidewalks more pleasant for strolling. In December 2002, the local baseball league removed permanent fencing and replaced it with semi-permanent fencing, fulfilling a long-standing request from local residents for a multi-use park. The field is now available for year-round sports activities. City streets and sidewalks surrounding the park were upgraded in 2003, thanks to support from local property owners and the City. At the request of the Nanaimo Park Committee and local residents, more street parking has been provided for park users. [top] Wales Street Heritage Day Festival (2002 - 2003)The Wales Street Heritage Day Festival, held in 2002 and 2003, was a community event organized by residents to raise public awareness about the unique character of Wales Street, including Avalon Dairy, circa 1909. The festival attracted over 1,400 people and featured heritage walking tours, cake walks, a petting zoo and displays by local community agencies.
