Hotel East
445 Gore Street
When it was built in 1912 according to a design by architect S.B.
Birds, the top three floors of the Hotel East provided lodgings
for recently arrived Chinese immigrants. The fresh produce shops
at street level are a few of the hundreds of Chinese-owned green
groceries throughout the city. In the 1880s and 1890s, growing and
selling vegetables and fruits were occupations open to Chinese.
