Thanks for visiting the City’s Aboriginal Community web-pages. This page contains an overview of the many projects and activities in which the Social Planning Department are engaged as well as related community resources.

     

Storyscapes
Storyscapes supports Aboriginal people to share their stories through a variety of media: written form, video, public art, theatre, dance, song, and more. You can see a sample of the story panels from the Storyscapes Chinatown chapter or visit the Storyscapes website.

Demographics
This section contains an overview of the aboriginal communities living in Vancouver. Did you know that Vancouver is home to 11,730 Aboriginal people, or 2.0% of the city’s population? This includes First Nations, Métis and Inuit people from all across Canada.

Local First Nations
Vancouver is bounded by three local First Nations who have lived in this area for thousands of years. These are the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh. Read a capsule history of the Nations and their historical and living presence in the Lower Mainland area.

The Social Policy Division works to support Vancouver's Aboriginal community in accessing services, building capacity and having a voice in civic government. We do this through our grants program, supporting various community services, and a range of other initiatives.
