Welcome to the City of Vancouver
Founded in 1886, our city has a relatively short history. But we take a long-term approach to making it a livable city with a sustainable future. Over the years, plans for housing, services, transportation, finances and infrastructure have played key roles in making Vancouver a city that respects the environment and provides residents with opportunities to live, work and prosper. Since these fundamentals can always be improved, the City continually reviews plans to identify where and how we need to innovate to ensure that Vancouver remains a livable city with a sustainable future. We see four key elements in this ongoing process.
- With residents from around the world speaking more than 70 languages, thriving neighbourhood communities and downtown core, and a broad-based economy, we are a diverse city.
- With extensive public consultation in planning and decision making, and a goal of providing services to all residents, we are an inclusive city.
- In realizing a clearly articulated vision of the city as a great place to live, work, shop and play close to home, we are a livable city.
- As a diverse, inclusive and livable city committed to integrating economic, ecological and social impacts in our decision making, we seek to become a sustainable city.
