Keynote speaker Allison Arieff

Allison Arieff writes the "By Design" column for the Op/Ed section of the New York Times, and is editor at large for Sunset magazine. Formerly, she was the senior content lead for the global design and innovation firm IDEO. From 2002-2006, she was the editor in chief of Dwell, and was the magazine's founding senior editor. During her tenure at Dwell, the magazine received the National Magazine Award for General Excellence; she also spearheaded the Dwell Home Design Invitational competition which culminated in the creation of the Dwell Homes by Empyrean program, a partnership for the design and manufacture of modern affordable prefab homes. She is the author of the books "Prefab" and "Trailer Travel: A Visual History of Mobile America," and has written about architecture and design for Travel & Leisure, Sunset, and the House & Home section of the New York Times. Arieff has been featured on CNN, dna (Design and Architecture), Sound Money, Marketplace, and most recently, on the Sundance Channel's sustainability series "Big Ideas for a Small Planet." Arieff spent her early career in book publishing, including stints at Random House, Oxford University Press, and Chronicle Books where she edited titles on art, design, and popular culture, including "Airstream: A History of the Land Yacht" and "Hatch Show Print: The History of a Great American Poster Shop."
