Bursary Recipients
In response to the call for applications, fifty-three (53) submissions were received for the City of Vancouver’s Creative Place + Space Bursary. Jury members were incredibly impressed with the range of applications and the types of projects underway and after a difficult selection process, ten applicants were recommended to receive full registrations plus a $950 stipend for the Creative Places + Spaces Conference from October 28 through 30, 2009 in Toronto. Selections were based on the enthusiasm and involvement of the applicant in cultural space issues and/or projects and their commitment to share conference learning’s with the larger Vancouver cultural community.

About the Conference
Creative Places + Spaces is one of the world's leading forums on creativity. Under the theme of 'The Collaborative City', the overarching idea is that collaboration fuels innovation by connecting people, places and ideas. The conference will engage global perspectives on collaboration and connect them with local change makers. The Creative Places + Spaces conference will appeal to those interested in building bridges across boundaries in order to solve problems, generate new ideas, or foster transformation related to creative spaces.
Creative Places + Spaces is a multi-media, interactive conference designed to inspire, empower, and connect thinkers, policymakers and practitioners working to build vibrant, dynamic, sustainable and creative places. During Creative Places + Spaces: The Collaborative City, delegates and speakers together will have the opportunity to hear, see, exchange and practice global perspectives on collaboration and connect them to local opportunities for change. Conference Schedule:
Bursary Recipients are expected to attend the full conference including pre-conference tours (Wed, Oct 28). Conference Schedule (subject to change):
- Tuesday, October 27 – Depart for Toronto
- Wednesday, October 28 – Pre-conference tours and mini Artscape workshop for Vancouver delegates
- Thursday, October 29 & Friday, October 30 – Conference Day One & Two
- Saturday, October 31 – Return to Vancouver
Creative Places + Spaces Bursary
What the Bursary Covers:
- Full conference registration including pre-conference tours, conference proceedings, materials, light breakfasts, luncheons and receptions
- Mini Artscape workshop for the Vancouver participants in Toronto
- $950 stipend (Note: a portion of the stipend ($200) is contingent on participation in a post-conference wrap-up gathering where delegates will be asked to share some of the learning’s from the conference. Details to be announced at a later date.)
Eligibility:
The Creative Places + Spaces Bursary was open to Vancouver-based
- professional artist /creators
- individuals representing Vancouver arts and culture organizations, and
- others involved in creative space development.
Only one application per organization/business was accepted.
Priority for the Creative Places + Spaces Bursaries was given to individuals or organizational representatives who could demonstrate how they planned to bring what they learned at the conference back to their community, audience, organizations and networks. Applicants from arts/culture organizations/agencies/businesses were required to submit a letter of support from their Director, Board or CEO. Individual artist/creators were required to submit evidence of residency within the City of Vancouver.
Application Process and Selection Criteria:
Ten bursaries were awarded through a competitive juried process. Applications were reviewed by a selection committee made up of one staff member from Vancity, one from the City of Vancouver, Cultural Services and an arts/culture community member. Applications were assessed based on the following criteria:
- Relevance of the conference to the applicant’s individual professional development goals;
- Relevance of the conference to the applicant / organization’s capital development goals;
- Benefit of the applicant’s participation in the conference to the larger Vancouver arts and culture community.
The Creative Places + Spaces Bursary is presented by the City of Vancouver Cultural Services in partnership with Vancouver City Savings Credit Union
