Architect selected for 1 Kingsway project

An architect has been selected for the 1 Kingsway project. Busby & Associates Architects will be designing the new Mount Pleasant Community Centre and Mount Pleasant Library. This site was purchased by the City of Vancouver in 2001 for a joint-use facility, which will also feature a childcare centre and rental apartments.

This development is a joint project of City of Vancouver, Vancouver Park Board and Vancouver Public Library. In the municipal election held November 16, 2002, citizens voted overwhelmingly in favour of the referendum item supporting Public Works, Safety and Facilities, which included financial support for the 1 Kingsway project.

Busby & Associates Architects was formed in 1984. This Vancouver-based firm is locally and internationally recognized as a leader in excellence in design, client service, "green" buildings and sustainable design. Examples of Busby & Associates' work include public projects like the Brentwood and Gilmore SkyTrain Stations, Wall Centre Hotel, and the Nicola Valley Institute of Technology.

The 1 Kingsway project will continue an extensive public process. Both the Board of Parks & Recreation and Vancouver Public Library have already started consulting with stakeholders on the development of their respective areas. A study of the childcare needs and preferences for Mount Pleasant was commissioned by the City of Vancouver Child Development Coordinator.

Details on the project and public meetings will be posted at the project Web site www.1kingsway.ca after May 15.
