June 2, 2003Web Site Launched for 1 Kingsway,the Mount Pleasant Civic ComplexA new Web site, www.1kingsway.ca, launched today to provide information about 1 Kingsway, an innovative civic project that includes a new Mount Pleasant Community Centre, Mount Pleasant Library, child care centre and rental housing that will be constructed at Kingsway and 7th Avenue. Residents are encouraged to visit the site often to track the progress of the project, find out about public meetings and to learn about how to get involved. 1 Kingsway is a joint project of the City of Vancouver, the Vancouver Park Board and the Vancouver Public Library. The concept for a combined facility reflects Vancouver's CityPlan vision for developing neighbourhood centres that bring together multiple civic services. A rental housing component, funded and held by the City's Property Endowment Fund, the City's real estate investment portfolio, will also be built to take advantage of the development capacity of the site and reduce the land cost to the civic facilities. Principles of sustainability will guide the design and development of this project to create a safe and healthy facility that makes efficient use of resources and leaves the best legacy for the future. Initial funding of six million for the project was included in the City's 2000-2002 Capital Plan. An additional $7.5 million is targeted for the project in the 2003-2005 Capital Plan. The balance of the $26.7 million funding will be provided from developer contributions and by the Property Endowment Fund for the rental housing component. In September 2001, Vancouver City Council approved the purchase of the property at 1 Kingsway. In 2002, the old buildings on the purchased site were demolished. In March 2003, the contract for consulting services for the project was awarded to the architectural firm of Busby and Associates Architects. For more information: Melanie Marchand
