Acid-etching graffiti poses health risk

A form of graffiti known as "acid-etching" is appearing on glass bus shelters around Vancouver. The ingredients in glass etch cream are dangerous, and people should avoid touching any etchings.

Etch cream can cause deeply penetrating burns to the skin, eyes, and lungs. Also, chemical burns may be felt hours after touching the product, and the burns are very deep in the tissue.

Anyone that comes into contact with the chemicals should seek immediate medical attention. For more detailed health information, contact the Poison Control Centre at 604-682-5050.

Approximately 100 bus shelters have been affected. Glass replacement at vandalized bus shelters is underway. To report graffiti, contact the Vancouver Police Department by calling 911.
