City of Vancouver News Release

January 11, 2005

City offers free de-icing salt for sidewalks

The City of Vancouver will offer free salt to Vancouver residents due to a current shortage of salt at retailers. The salt can be used to clear sidewalks of snow and ice around residential premises during cold weather.

Starting the morning of January 12, Vancouver residents can bring their own container to the corner of National and Thornton streets (near the VIA Rail station/bus depot); show proof of residency (drivers licence, utility bill, etc); and get up to 5 kg of free salt. This salt will be available Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., until retail supplies once again become available.National Works Yard map

Environment Canada has predicted temperatures could drop in Vancouver to -7C on January 15. The City asks residents to make this winter safe for everyone by clearing your sidewalk of snow and ice by 10 a.m. (Snow clearing is mandatory for all property owners, except one- and two-family homes outside the downtown peninsula.)
The City encourages everyone to clear their sidewalks, and help others who can't.

Commuters are reminded to take transit where possible, allow more time for vehicle trips, and slow down.

More information on snow/ice removal in the City of Vancouver is available on the City’s web site at www.vancouver.ca/snow
